What a year it has been!
I want to thank each and every member of the Wett Ones family for making 2018 one of our biggest and best yet.  With 50 new members this calendar year, our second placing in the Masters NSW tally and more swimmers swimming every week, it is indeed an exciting time to be the President of this great club.

Firstly, welcome our new members for this month: Luca Alessi, Robert Allison, Raymond Diep, Sue Purcell, Zarrar Khan, Daniel Kowalski, Tiffanie O’Neill, Daniel Mezrani and Grant Slade  Thank you for joining the Wett Ones family.

Membership renewals are now open

Wett Ones and Masters Swimming NSW memberships fall due on 31 December 2018 - for insurance reasons, if your membership is not paid after this date you will not be able to swim with us until you have renewed.  Thanks to the 40+ members who have already renewed for the new year!

You can renew your membership for 2019 by logging in to the Masters Swimming NSW website.

Combined Wett Ones/MSNSW membership is $130 ($85 for 25 and under/concession).

Non-members, including those who have not renewed their membership, will lose access to our closed Facebook group from 31 January 2019.  Non-members can continue to keep up to date with the club via our public Facebook and Instagramaccounts.

Wett Ones 2018 Christmas Party
A big thanks to Brad and the team who pulled together an amazing Christmas Party at the Tamarama Surf Lifesaving Club on Sunday.  Close to 70 members of the club, and their partners, came along to enjoy tables (and tables, and tables) of food.  A big thumbs up, also, to Nick, Mark and Charlie who plied their skills on the BBQ and to those who helped with the clean up - the people at Tama were so impressed with how clean we left the venue and how strong our club culture is.  Well done!
It was a great opportunity to reflect on the past 12 months:

  • second place in the Masters NSW points score tally,

  • participated in the Gay Games in Paris – more than 30 Wett Ones made the journey with our fabulous foursome of ladies, and some of the men, winning gold, silver and bronze medals,

  • more than 130 members, making us the largest Masters NSW swimming club, and by far the largest gay and lesbian swimming club in Australia,

  • heaps of social activities – more than 50 members marched in the 2018 Mardi Gras and the 2019 float looks mesmerising!

  • more opportunities to swim, with morning sessions at Victoria Park and ocean swimming training,

  • new partnership with Speedo, alongside existing sponsors (see below to show your support),

  • new coaches and lots more faces on the pool deck each week

We also had an opportunity to recognise excellence in the Masters Swimming Australia national ‘swim series’:

  • Jodie Johnson placed 9th in her age group;

  • Susie Purcell placed 6th in her age group; and

  • David Loader came 2nd in his age group, scoring the highest number of points for any male swimmer in New South Wales.

David was pipped for first place by not-yet Wett One Mark Sendecky, who is the clear leader in his age group and well on track for overall points victory for the year.  Hurry up and transfer your membership, Mark!

In  Committee work
The Committee met on Monday night where we approved the Budget for the year ahead.  A reminder that fees for most sessions will increase from 1 January:
            Morning and evening sessions - $6.00 ($3.00 for 25 and under/concession)
            Lunchtime sessions - $5.50 ($2.75 for 25 and under/concession)
We have begun working on a strategic plan for the period 2019 to 2022.  A draft is under consideration and we will share something with members early in the New Year.  Our eyes are firmly set on a big contingent of Wett Ones competing in IGLA carnival in Melbourne in February 2020, ahead of the Gay Games in Hong Kong in 2022 – these will both be a major focus for the club and will be at the heart of our strategy for the short and medium term.
Our sponsorship prospectus has also been finalised, and we will be contacting existing and prospective sponsors in the near future asking for their support for 2019.  If you have a small business and you would like to support us, please get in touch.

We also discussed fundraising activities, our swim meet in April, Mardi Gras, the Myall BPS meet and a swim camp in October 2019.  There is much on our agenda for the new year!
Christmas and New Year sessions
Wett Ones will continue swimming over the Christmas break, albeit with reduced hours due to pool and coach availability.

Evening classes at Sydney Uni pool will be cancelled on:
Wednesday 19 December
Sunday 23 December
Monday 24 December (Christmas Eve)
Wednesday 26 December (Boxing Day)
Monday 31 December (New Years’ Eve)

Luncthime and morning classes will suspend from Thursday 20 December 2018 and resume in the week beginning 14 January 2019.

Upcoming events
Tickets for the Australia Day boat party are on sale now.  Tickets are available exclusively for members and their partners until early January – whatever is left will then be opened to friends of the club.  This promises to be a fun day out on the most beautiful harbour in the world. 🌈🇦🇺⛵️

Mark 19 January in your diary for the first swimming carnival of the year.  The Campbelltown BPS Meet is a fun day out – we will probably follow it with some casual drinks and dinner back in the city afterwards.  Evan will be encouraging lots of people to register so we can start the year off strong. 🌈🏊‍♀️🏊‍♂️

If you're planning a trip to New Zealand for the Australia Day long weekend, our friends at Different Strokes Wellington are holding their annual swim meet.  It will be held between 2pm and 5pm at the Kilbirnie Pool.  Details on their website. 🌈🇳🇿

It has been a big year for the club.  I really did mean what I said on Sunday – I have the best job in Masters Swimming, leading the biggest club in the state with lots of exciting opportunities ahead.  Thank you for making my job, and that of the committee, such a delight.
In closing, I wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas.  Please travel safe, enjoy some time off and let’s gear up for an even bigger year for Wett Ones in 2019.
