Wett Ones IPS Carnival

Held annually on the first Saturday in June at Sydney University.

Club Nights

Club Nights have finished for 2007. Check back in early 2008 for details of next year's club nights.

Club nights are usually held on the first Friday night of each month starting at 6:30pm. Club night will be held alongside the usual Friday night sessions for those that don't like racing.

Each club night there are two, three or four races and you can enter one, some or all of them. There are prizes to be won but not for being the fastest.

The idea is partly to give some variety to training and partly to give many swimmers some experience of racing when that is new to them. It will give you some practice at starting, swimming hard and fast, turning, and at timing. All of these will be important when it comes our to run to host a carnival.

You enter by telling submitting times for the events you wish to enter and estimating your time for that event. This may be a little hard for people who haven't raced before, or for a long time, but part of the idea; to give you some indication of how fast you swim.

Points are awarded for swimming as close as possible to your nominated time. Points are tallied over the season of nine Club Nights, and prizes are awarded at our AGM, usually in November. This obviously means that you don't have to be fast to win.

You will be seeded into heats of three swimmers, so you will be racing people of roughly your standard. Your entries can be emailed to rece secreatary (Ian Davis) in advance, or just before racing starts on the night.

Get there promptly so that you can have a proper warm-up (around 800m) before the first race.

Get in touch with Ian, or other old timers, if you have any queries.

This year's Club Nights are sponsored by Andrew Collishaw (one of our lane 7 swimmers) and the Tilbury Hotel.

You can get the full results for past seasons by contacting our race secretary.

Aerobic Swimming

We aim to hold an aerobic swim session most Sunday mornings at Sydney Uni pool when there is nothing else on. These will be held mainly in winter when the summer ocean swimming season doesn't distract us. See the calender at the top of this page for the next upcoming aerobic swim.

We will usually start at 10 am and go for about two hours, depending on numbers, energy, motivation, hangovers etc.

They won't be held when there is a carnival on that day.

Aerobic swimming is an annual series of timed long distance swims for which points are awarded to the club in both the State and National Aerobic Swimming competitions. You can set out to do all 62 swims each year, or just come along to get some kilometres under your belt. Although the swims are timed, there is no pressure. Points are awarded for each swim, or group of swims, in the annual National and State competitions, but we don't focus on that too much. Contact our aerobic swimming co-ordinator or our race secretary for more details. Any times swum in an aerobic swim session will count for State and national Top Tens, PBs and club records (including splits), though not State or national records.

The full program of 62 swims for each calendar year includes five 400m and five 800m swims in each of the five strokes (freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and IM) as well as one 1500m, 30 minute, 45 minute and 60 minute swim in each of the three easy strokes (freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke). You can, of course, do as many or as few as you like. Each year, about two dozen swimmers in NSW do all 62 swims, and about half of them get maximum points. Steven Sexton in 2004 is the only Wett One so far to achieve this. Any swim of 400m or longer in any carnival or club night is automatically included in the aerobics scheme by our club race secretary, so some of you participate unwittingly (or even unwillingly) anyway.
